pre-adventure backstory
The demon stepped back from the conflagration in the stone maw of the hillside, extracting a cruelly sharp, blackened blade from the forge. Undisturbed by the blazing heat surrounding him, he plunged the iron into a trough and gouts of steam enveloped him, obscuring his inhuman deep-blue furred flesh. As the steam dissipated, he held the weapon aloft, and his tail, slightly-pointed, reached for a near-empty whiskey bottle on a table behind him.

“Good enough for Gwerm,” he muttered to himself, peering down each of the edges. With a gesture, a stub of a cigar floated toward his outstretched free hand. With another, a spark of flame in his palm lit it and he clenched it in his teeth.

“OK, Chucklehead,” he addressed an empty spot in the forge. “Quit pumping those bellows and take this over to the rack and polish it.” The sword slowly floated away from his hand along with a stained rag from a workbench as the demon took a last swig from the bottle.

A contemptuous toss from his tail smashed the finely crafted bottle against the stones of the forge. He wrapped a heavy cloak about his shoulders and pulled the hood down over his eyes as he stepped out of the darkening workshop, pulling a heavy door closed behind him. Above his head, a greatsword stuck into the wooden lintel with a sloppily carved and stained “BLADES” written on the exposed portion. He grinned. “It’s party time.”

He traveled the Gate District of Kenabres in a seemingly random pattern, but in effect always choosing the darkest and least populated alleys and streets, slowly making his way east. Upon needing to cross the main thoroughfare from Southgate, however, he was hailed.

Three city guardsmen approached. “Hold there, citizen, if you please,” amiably but forcibly spoke a young blond woman in an officer’s uniform. Flanking her were two male grizzled soldiers, one with a red, drooping mustache and another bald, with a white goatee. The demon’s shoulders sank as he stopped and turned.

“Kindly, remove yo—” began the officer.

“Yeah, yeah, see I’m complying. I’m complying,” the demon grumbled, pulling back his hood. He looked up at her with an unnerving, pupilless red gaze. He smiled then, his fangs gleaming, upon recognizing the mustached guard. “Got yourself a new commander, Bonzo? Does she know you real well, yet?”

“Shut your mouth, Dusk, or I’ll shut it for you,” growled the guard.

“I’ll address the citizen, Bonzeretti. Thank you,” interrupted the officer, coolly. “I am Lieutenant Cadmere of the Everbright Crusaders. We have volunteered to assist the city guard in their patrols. You must be the tiefling weaponsmith?”

“That’s me, Lieutenant. I’m not too tough to recognize.”

“Yes. Er… quite,” said the discomfited Cadmere.

“I could just tell by the smell, Lieutenant,” added Bonzeretti. “He stinks like a crusader camp shit pit.” The other male guard laughed aloud at that.

“Your wife never seems to mind, Bonzo,” purred Dusk. “In fact, I thought I’d pay her a visit. How long are you on patrol tonight? Poor lady probably won’t need more than a quarter-bell to feel things she didn’t know a woman could…”

“YOU SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH, FREAK!” bellowed the guard, his face bright red, pulling a dagger as he was held back by his companions. “I’LL CUT YOUR FUCKING HEART OUT!”

“That’s enough, Bonzeretti,” Lieutenant Cadmere ordered, forcing the man back a pace with a slight shove.

Dusk snickered as the officer then turned on him. “And you. You will keep a civil tongue to the defenders of this city who risk their lives for you every day.”

Dusk took a pull on his cigar then realized it had gone out. Lighting it again from his finger, he said, “Lieutenant, I offer respect when respect is given, not when it’s demanded.”

“That’s as may be, citizen,” she replied. “Now I must ask where you are headed tonight?”

The demon quirked an eyebrow at her, glancing at the holy symbol of Iomedae upon her breastplate. “Not that I need to share my business, but if you must ask, I’m on my way to worship. Then I thought I’d enjoy a nightcap at the Defender’s Heart.”

“He’s lying,” said Bonzeretti.

“No… No, he isn’t,” countered Cadmere, a quizzical expression on her face. “Very interesting. I sense no evil in him either. Be on your way, citizen. May your prayers bring you solace. You would do well to remember what I told you.”

“So would you, Lieutenant,” he chuckled, pulling up his hood again and, ignoring the small crowd of halflings who had gathered at the sound of shouting, headed east into their neighborhood of smaller houses.

It was not long before the demon realized that five halfling children, their eyes shining, were following him.

“Do another trick, mister! How about some magic! Come on, mister!” they cried as soon as he’d made the mistake of turning to look at them.

“Get lost, runts,” he grumbled, to no effect. “No magic today,” he attempted, unsuccessfully. “I’m tired,” he muttered and was ignored.

Suddenly he spun around, his hands forming menacing claw shapes, his tail arching above his cloak. “I’m going to eat all of you if you keep bothering me!”

The halfling children squealed in delighted fear and then laughed. “Just one, mister! Please?!”

“Fine!” the demon snapped, sitting himself down hard on the ground. The children pressed closer. He took a draw from his cigar and blew a cloud of smoke above them. Then, he reached into the smoke and began to shape it with his hands and tail. When it finally resembled a small, grey cat with an overlarge head, he grasped its now solid form and handed it to the first halfling girl. She held onto it like it was the most precious thing she’d ever seen.

“Remember,” he said, “It’s fragile so don’t break it. Or go ahead and break it, I don’t give a rat’s ass. It will just go away in an hour anyway. Just like everything you’ll probably ever care about.”

Over the cries of “Me, next!” and “No, me!” came a harsher adult halfling voice from a second-floor window eight feet above them. A white-haired halfling looked down. “Hey! Git along, you troublemaker! Afore I fetch the Guard on ye! And you younglings, git! Git on home!”

The children whined as Dusk pushed himself upright. “Don’t have to tell me twice, Grannie,” he muttered. “Just trying to mind my own business.”

“Well, you take your business out of our neighborhood, monster!” she harried, as the demon made his way east again through the shadows of the larger estates and the Gate District park.

The wind picked up in this sparser part of the city. Though the cold didn’t bother him, he instinctively pulled his cloak tighter. He watched the clouds drift past, obscuring the nearly full moon but not enough to hide the dark scar across its surface. He knew the scholars of the Blackwing Library believed the moonscar was the result of a demonic incursion like the Worldwound which loomed over all life in Kenabres like a shroud of death. “No place is safe,” Dusk muttered to himself.

Returning to cobbled streets, he came to a familiar building. Warm light behind yellow curtained windows flanked a front door with a symbol of three outward pointing daggers carved upon it. But the demon instead went down a darkened alley to another door, more discreetly located.

Not long after his soft knocking, it opened to reveal a middle-aged half-elven woman, dressed in yellow silk, henna dyed patterns along her bare throat, arms and legs. Her hair, piled dark above her green eyes, featured two long and sharp pins with the same symbol as on the front door. She sighed heavily at seeing him.

The demon stubbed his cigar out in the palm of his hand and said, “If I was a sensitive man, Eloise, I’d worry that you weren’t glad to see me. Are you not going to invite me in?”

She stole a glance behind her and Dusk thought he heard the sound of sobbing. “It’s not a good night, Dusk. Some hero didn’t have any demons to slay tonight so he got a bit rough with Verbena.”

Dusk narrowed his gaze and he bared his fangs. “You want me to find him? It would be my pleasure.”

Eloise smiled slightly and patted his shoulder. “We’ve got things well in hand, The Lady in the Room and myself. Rest assured, this clod will be feeling the Savored Sting soon enough.” She gently raised his chin to face her. “If you’re here, that must mean you completed your order of cold-iron longswords for Horgus Gwerm. Are you delivering them yourself?”

He laughed. “Me in the upper districts? Of course not. Some schmuck will come by, probably way too early, I’ll bet.” He tried to peek around the corner but she held him back. “So, can I come in or what? I need to show Calistria my gratitude. I’ll make Verbena forget all about that other guy.”

She shook her head. “Come back later, Dusk. Go have a drink. We have several guests scheduled and well, it’s best if you are last to enter the sacred rooms. We can air them out in the morning, you see.”

Dusk’s face fell. He scowled and looked down at his feet again. “You too, huh? I should have stayed at the forge.”

“Now, now, my little tiefling,” she chided, good-naturedly tousling his hair. “We’ve known each other for way too long for you to pull some melodrama. We’ll give you a nice bath tonight, on the house, and you can enter the sacred boudoir like the true devotee of Calistria we know you are. Go on now and don’t come back for at least three bells.”

He smiled up at her, then and re-lit his cigar. “You’re still the prettiest woman in Kenabres, Eloise. So, as a true devotee, when do I get to bed the high courtesan cleric herself?”

“That,” she smiled, closing the door, “will have to remain a holy mystery.”

With a bounce in his step, the demon made his way to the Defender’s Heart, the largest and most popular inn in Kenabres. From the roar inside, it sounded as though it was quite a crowd this night. He got a step inside the door when he felt a strong forearm across his chest. “Hold it there, fuzzy.”

He looked up to see a broad-shouldered human woman in boiled leather armor, a heavy club resting against the wall behind her. “Good evening, Tulip,” he grinned. “You’re as intimidatingly lovely as ever.”

With a sneer across her scarred face, she pointed across the common room. Past where a northern barbarian seemed to be trying to entertain a small crowd by plucking some strings on a tree trunk, there gathered a group of armored men in vestments of orange flame.

“Don’t pull any funny business tonight,” she said. “Fucking Witch Hunters got a night off it seems.”

He gazed over at the adherents of Prelate Hurlun Shappok and nodded. At the sight of the city’s secret police, ferreters out of all impurities, he pulled his hood lower. “Thanks, Tulip,” he muttered as he slipped away in the opposite direction of the Witch Hunters to order some Dwarven whiskey from Kimroth Otai, the one-armed former mercenary tending his own bar tonight.

Sparing a glance at the amorous couple who, after he’d sat, proceeded to find another place further away, he stared down at the dark amber liquid and then shot it back.

Otai refilled his glass after picking a couple more silvers from the pile in front of him. “What’s with the unwelcoming committee?” he asked the retired mercenary.

The one-armed man shrugged, pouring himself a shot. “All men like a drink now and then. Something’s in the air, though. Lots of folk out you don’t normally see. Wheels are in motion.”

Dusk grunted and tossed back his whiskey. “I’ve seen it all, Kim. Crusades come and crusades go. Orders rise and vanish. The only things that stay the same are the demons and those that come to kill ‘em. Maybe when they do, they need a new blade. Most of the time I never see them again.”

Otai raised his glass. “To the crusaders that didn’t come back.”

“Crusaders? Fuck them, I’m talking about the blades.”

Otai coughed and sputtered a laugh through his drink. “You’re a real bastard, Dusk.”

“I’m just as the Abyss made me,” answered the demon.

Three-and-a-half bells later, after almost everyone except the professional drunks had gone home, Dusk tripped lightly past Tulip out the door. A smile crossed his face as he thought about the bath and the sacred prostitutes of Calistria awaiting him mere blocks away.

“A bit late to be walking around, isn’t it, freak?” said a voice out of the shadows. Dusk blinked and watched Bonzerelli of the city guard step in front of him.

“Hiya, Bonzo,” he replied casually, “That nice young paladin let you off your leash? Where’s your bald boyfriend? Visiting your wife?”

“Right here,” said another voice, close behind him. Then a third, “We’ve been waiting a real long time and it’s real cold out tonight.”

“Real dark too,” said Dusk as he took an exaggeratedly staggering step to his right. Then with a wave of his hand, all suddenly went dark. He bolted left in between the startled guards and turned the corner…

…only to feel a violent clout on his head, sending him reeling against the wall. He tasted blood and realized he’d bitten his own tongue. His darkvision showed him a face he didn’t recognize, a big man with a neat mustache and beard in full plate armor. “He’s here. I’ve got him,” the man said, one gauntleted hand grasping Dusk’s cloak.

“… the fug are yu?” Dusk mumbled, trying to clear his head. Footsteps announced the arrival of Bonzerelli and the other guards.

“Just someone who has suffered far more than you will this night because of your kind. It is a blasphemy that you walk these same streets brave men and women died to defend. Prepare to feel Iomedae’s judgment.”

“Wai… waid a minnut, pleesh,” said the demon, looking up at the angry human faces, who paused.

“Couldn’t I feel her tits instead?” he laughed, and then felt the first of the blows to his stomach, his face, his back as he tried to cover up.

“Well,” he thought. “At least I won’t have trouble sleeping tonight.”

Down, down, down...

Dusting themselves off from the rubble include some visitors to Kenabres: the half-elven mercenary fighter, Neva; Kostner Lotran, a traveling hunter; Halved-in-Twain, a barbarian and musician; along with some city residents: Susannae Estarron, a young paladin of Iomedae; Dusk, a tiefling magus; Anevia Tirabade, an elven crusader with an injured leg; Aravashnial, a wizard and scholar struck blind in the fall; and Horgus Gwern, a well-connected merchant and noble.

As they recover and gain their bearings, Neva, Dusk, and Kostner go off to explore, Susannae shakes off the trauma of the attack, and Halved-in-Twain collects some fallen scales from the silver dragon whose last dying act appeared to be to cast a protective bubble around this small group of survivors saving them from the deep deep fall. They discover in the cavern some giant maggots which they dispense with and Horgus Gwerm hires them to lead him safely back to his home. He and Aravashnial and Anevia are all at odds with one another.

Searching passageways, they come across a bag with some useful potions, some giant cockroaches at the remains of a camp, and a giant snake hiding in a pile of bones.

They eventually find their way to a forgotten temple to Torag, god of honor.

Buried Secrets

Dusk here…

Myself, Halved In Twain, Kostner Lotran, Susannae Estarron, Neva, Horgus Gwerm, Anevia, and Aravashnial have come upon a forgotten underground temple to Torag, god of honor and planning. Susannae feels the area for evil. She senses the dusty figure kneeling before the altar is evil.

It turns and appears to be a rotten dwarf, what we learn is a huecuva, a blasphemous spirit. It sweeps toward Susannae, but misses her. Kostner hears a buzzing sound and alerts us. Susannae strikes the dwarf with her sword. A giant fly comes at us and I blast it with a color spray and it falls unconscious.

Then I stab at the fly. It’s surprisingly tough. Neva finishes it off. Halved-in-Twain destroys the huecuva. Anevia seems very interested in the temple. The altar is shaped like a hammer. There is another laying on the ground, a grabbable one. The huecuva has a ring and some potinos, which Halved takes. I ask Anevia what’s wrong. She says the place is very sad.

Halved grabs a masterwork hammer from the ground. Anevia says to Horgus who is uninterested and wants to leave, “Don’t be afraid of your faith.” Horgus says, “People who consort with thieves shouldn’t give advice.” They bicker. It turns out that Irabeth Tirabade is Anevia’s wife, a renowned member of the Eaglewatch.

Horgus is angry and says he isn’t waiting. Neva follows him. Halved lifts Anevia. We travel a long way. I’m sullen.

Gwerm leads the way, complaining. They come to a room with carved figures of crusaders who bear expressions of sadness. There are six of them but some have partially collapsed. The statues look old, maybe 100 years, made from around when the Worldwound opened. Susannae explains what is there to Aravashnial, who explains this was made by the first crusaders, who were driven underground, corrupted by a demonic taint. They were outcast.

I question Aravashnial about who these are. He says, “Mongrelmen, don’t you know?” Then it all goes dark. I recognize it as a darkness spell. I yell in Abyssal, “Wait! Don’t attack!” As figures drop down, I realize they are darkmantles not tieflings like myself. I warn the others not to let them grab you.

Halved-in-Twain chops one in half. Neva injures herself again. Halved comes over and cuts it and then Neva finishes it. Halved mentions that he found potions, they are cure light wounds. I climb Halved and find a potion of lesser restoration where the darkmantles had nested. Halved offers me a snakeweed cigar.

I insist on sneaking ahead somewhat, hoping to speak with any people like me before the others see them. I find a huddled, half-spooked dwarf muttering to himself. “You’re going to kill me!” he yells and begins casting a spell.

I jump out towards him and almost break my sword. The rest rush out to join me. He blurs himself. “Worst spell ever, dude,” I say. Neva whacks him then Halved knocks him unconscious. He has a chipped statuette of marble. He has a spellbook, scroll of shocking grasp, another scroll, a couple potions of cure light wounds, and money. I leave him a note in his spellbook, in Dwarven: “Okay, I know what it’s like to be an outcast, so we didn’t kill you. Stop casting Blur. It sucks. If you come up to the city, look me up. I’ll teach you some good spells. – Dusk.”

I sneak ahead again. It becomes a steeply inclined tunnel, heading north Kostner notes. There are lots of hooks. We pull ourselves up, slowly, to another tunnel for another mile. It opens into a large cavern with cylindrical rock formations to make a dome. There was a tall tower that is now collapsed. At the bottom of the tower, I see two figures fixatedly digging at the tower.

They are not tieflings. They are deformed and injured. The woman is covered in tumors. The male is half horned-elven and half reptilian. I say, “Hello, brothers!” in Abyssal. The one says, “Do you speak Common?” He says one of their brethren is trapped under some stone.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

Dusk here…

We offer to help the mongrelmen dig out their companion. There is a rock that could be moved but we can’t manage to lift it. I suggest sliding the rock with the help of a Grease spell. It works and we free a third mongrelman.

Kostner and Susannae ask about them. They say they live down here. Aravashnial calls them “pitborn.” Susannae diplomatically calms them down. They say they were in the tower. The leader says he knows a way to the surface. He says, “I am Lan. This is Dyra.” The one we rescued was Crell. I ask about tieflings. Lan says there are mostly people who look like them, not like me. He says there are problems of their own. I try to suggest to Gwerm that he play nicer with them as these people could become a private market for him. I ask them about life down here. They’re secluded. They don’t deal with surface-dwellers. They are descended from the first crusaders.

We come to a wide chasm showing that it has split recently. Halved climbs down and then slips and bangs himself against the wall, despite us holding him. Then he falls again climbing the other side and he injures himself again. Then he falls a third time, but we catch him. He swings down and then pushes off the other side to get all the way. The rest of us make our way across slowly. Kostner jumps across finally.

Then Lan leads us further, to a circular cavern. It is a den do a dangerous fungus called a spore coffer or a basideron, a plant creature with poisonous spores. Neva says you have to not breathe them in. I take the lead, with a cloth around my mouth from Neva. There are two bodies next to a heap of fungus. I back up and fire a bolt into it with a fiery piece of cloth. We go back in.

I see the two bodies, dressed in armor adorned like crusaders. Their faces near their noses and mouths have soot around them. Neva thinks the plant is dead. Kostner thinks they came from a lower tunnel. Their armor is of Iomedae. They wield spiked gauntlets and glaives. Lan says they are working with another tribe of pitborn. Templars of the Ivory Labyrinth, thinks Aravashnial, cultists of Baphomet. They infiltrated the crusader order.

They have masterwork chain shirts. There is also a potion and a scroll. There is also a bull-head brass symbol with ruby eyes. It looks like a symbol of Baphomet.

We leave and find more of the pitborn. Halved shares the dragon scales he’d been keeping with us as there are five of them. I feel supernaturally aware of their magic… Kostner can align a weapon with his to Lawful or Good. Mine gives me an ability to Alter Self three times a day and bluff evil creatures. I use it immediately. Susannae’s is protection against electricity and cold, as is Halved’s. Neva has one that can let her levitate.

There is a large cavern of luminescent fungi around an underground lake. Low wood and stone buildings are on an island in the middle of the lake. Greb is their blacksmith, I am told. He isn’t good, though. Halved demonstrates my skill at forging by cutting a rock with the sword I made him. I chastise him.

We walk down to the docks on the shore. We ride some rafts across the lake to another dock on the island. There is a building in the center. People poke their faces out to see us. Lan takes us to Chief Sull’s house. He is a large rat-mouthed guy with oily white hair, with a milky white eye. We tell him of the attack. He says the only way to the surface is through the traitor mongrelmen. They are working with surfacers. They want to attack the surface. He also wants us to tell the surfacers that they wish for peace.

He gives us a chest of potions, healing potions. He also asks about his son. His son had the brooch which I give back. He gives us in return a magic morningstar. I’m led to the blacksmith. He’s bad. I train him a little while I clean up the chain shirts.

The others do some trading. Then they go drink. Anevia and Susannae instead pray by the lake. Aravashnial is fascinated by the village. Susannae and Neva convince him to stop using offensive language. I join them for a drink.

Tricks in the Dark

Dusk, here…

We discuss plans. Susannae dislikes the idea of trickery. I convince the others that letting me infiltrate the traitors is the best way to avoid bloodshed and perhaps reunite the mongrelmen. We depart Neathholme and I give my instructions. We proceed to another dock and I make myself look like Crell after testing his voice. We take two rafts across the lake and exit the large cavern. We follow a passage southeast. I sneak ahead.

I spy some large cockroaches, five of them. I sneak back towards the others and plan to light them up with light blue dancing lights for us to shoot them. Halved does not appreciate being asked to hang back. Susannae kills one. Kostner kills another. I strike another. Susannae strikes another. Kostner wounds another. I miss one. Two fly up to Halved who blew the plan by rushing ahead. Susannae and Halved take them down. Halved takes another out as Neva moves up, and takes a bite from it. The last survives strangely, until Kostner finishes it.

We travel another ten minutes, then I turn a bend to see a light ahead. As the batwing-headed Crell, I approach. I see two figures behind a barrier. One carries a torch. It thins to about five feet, and I sent back a warning light to the others. When I get close enough I see the sentries in detail: One is tusked, the other is scaly.

They tell me, after hearing my tale of bringing news from Neathholme about outsiders, they say I need to see Hosilla. They lead me to a door. There is a bunk room on the other side with two more sleeping there. One then leads me to another room. There, there is a kitchen with a mongrelwoman with extra insect arms and extra eyes sitting there. She has a bow and arrows. She argues with the guards and says that she should be the one to take me. I try to delay them for a while, but she sends them off eventually and loses patience with me. Where are the others?

They are beginning to catch up. When they reach the guard post they begin to argue with one another over what to do. Halved wants to kick in the door. Kostner wants to wait and see. Neva wants to guard Gwerm. Susannae wants to knock politely.

The ant-face woman, whose name I learn is Wenduag wants me to give her all the information but I withhold some. She leads me downward. It’s more moist here. I hear and see a lot of water collecting in a pool. Hosilla is from the surface, she says, and is powerful. She says she follows here because she’s powerful and will kill her if she doesn’t. I say what would you do if Hosilla wasn’t here? Would you go back? She says she doesn’t think that she’d be welcomed back. I tell her that Chief Sull is soft. She agrees.

Meanwhile, the others meet the guards at the door.

I try to convince Wenduag that she’s going to die if she goes back up there. She seems to hesitate. I say they (the surfacers working for Sull) are going to kill all of you. But there’s so many of us, she counters. I say doesn’t matter. They’ll kill Hosilla. She says we have to see her. We pass by some more guards. They say Hosilla is in a rare mood.

The others take out the guards. Then they try to hold off the groggy ones waking up.

Wenduag takes me further into a common area with stains on the table. Our old leader was killed here, she says, and there, his wives were killed. I warn her again that the others will kill ALL of them, including her. She says that she just wanted to show me what Hosilla was capable of and we should leave. I tell her I could tell she was smarter than the rest of them.

Kostner and Neva take out the ones waking up. I return with Wenduag and argue with the others to bind the wounds of the guards. They do.

Wenduag tells us what we can expect. She explains where the guards are and how to get to Hosilla. Then she asks if she can leave but she needs to get something first.

She opens a door and a giant lizard falls outward. She runs through another door. I draw my rapier and step to one side of the lizard and strike it. But it grasps me in its jaws and knocks me flat and bleeding. Neva steps over me to strike it. Halved pours a potion down my throat. Kostner and Susannae shoot it, taking it out.

I yell at them to quickly catch Wenduag. Neva follows her and is ambushed by a couple of mongrelmen. Kostner fires through the door and strikes one and then Halved finishes him. I heal myself up with my own potion as Neva is wounded by the remaining one, who also wounds Halved. I dash into the room and look at the remaining mongrelman. I give him the finger and change to look like him. Then Halved halves him.

Religious Disputes

Dusk here…

We talk about what to do. I suggest letting Wenduag go, and we focus on Hosilla. I lead the way to try to take out the two guards at the next checkpoint. “Hey,” they say. “I heard noise up there.” I tell them Wenduag was knocking around an intruder. We laugh. Then I suggest I heard something and hit them with a color spray as their attention turns. One of them resists, however. Susannae arrives down the ladder. I daze him and then stab him with my rapier and the others start to arrive. Susannae shoots him too. Then I stab him again and Kostner finishes him. After Halved, Neva, and Susannae fail to knock out the other one, I do so. I ask them to drag the bodies behind the barrier and crouch.

I open the door and see a room with two mongrelmen and a human woman in chainmail with a glaive and a book. There is also a lanky tiefling with horns and hooves. She asks what’s going on. I bluff that Wenduag is with them up at the campfire. Hosilla sends two out to look and they see the others and cry out. I watch Hosilla cast Shield of Faith on herself.

Halved takes one of the guards out. I pretend to be frightened. Neva comes and strikes the other who steps away from the door, wounded. Hosilla waves a wand and a ghostly glaive appears. It cuts Neva down and she falls. Halved steps up and takes out the tiefling. I cry out to Hosilla to protect me and move to stand next to her.

She steps away from me angrily ordering me to defend her and waves her wand to attack Halved with the ghostly glaive. I throw a Daze on her and it works. Then Halved steps up and whacks her really hard. Susannae heals Neva and guards her body. I step around to flank Hosilla and stab her through.

We find two potions on her, the wand, two vials of alchemist’s fire, a tanglefoot bag, a masterwork glaive, and an antitoxin. Susannae looks and sees the book is a prayer book to Baphomet. There is also a note on her corpse. It warns her of the attack on Kenabres and speaks of the salvage of Yaniel’s sword. There are also three safehouses in Kenabres. It mentions the city of Drezen, a city in the Worldwound. There are references to Vorlesh and Lord Deskari demonlords. I argue with Susannae about the prayer book.

The three safehouses in Kenabres are the Tower of Estrod a library, Nyserian Manor a noble house headed by Kandro Nyserian, and Topaz Solutions, an alchemist store. I glance through the prayer book and decide I don’t need anything from it. I give it to Susannae to destroy and she does so, while praying.

Halved finds a room of soft pelts as a bed, plus a lockbox. I feel there is magic in it. Halved opens it. There is a nice sword case, a small pouch, and some scrolls. In the case is an elaborately made blade of a faded yellow color. It can not tell its enchantment. Susannae has heard of Yaniel. It was a paladin’s sword. Yaniel had disappeared into the Worldwound and rescued a bunch of crusaders. It glows when Susannae holds it.

There is a scroll of Cure Disease. I give it to Kostner. There are some gems in the bag: lapis lazuli, bloodstones, a citrine, and a pearl. I ask Halved to behead Hosilla so we can show it to her minions and make them surrender.

Halved kicks a door in and we see a kitchen. Butchered meat of giant rats, giant vermin, and mongrelmen and human remains too. There is a masterwork dagger in the kitchen. We exit, carrying the unconscious mongrelman to leave with the others.

Neva starts speaking to the charges who have been waiting for us while Halved leaves to open all the doors. I catch up to him. Susannae shows them the magic sword. Halved and I find a shaft going down. There are no mongrelmen.

Following where Wenduag had gone. I create a Silent Image of Crell to climb up the ladder to see if it gets shot full of arrows. I don’t see anything but I see giant rats snapping at my illusion. I tell the others to go up and attack them while they are distracted.

Heading Towards the Light

Dusk here…

Halved climbs up the ladder. Susannae creates some light. Halved says the illusion stopped working so I end the spell and send some light up. An arrow then flies at Halved. I knew it! It is Wenduag. Halved launches himself out of he hole. The rats bite him up. Another bites Kostner as he climbs. I tell Wenduag to give up, that Hosilla is dead and she’ll be dead too. She says, “I won’t be bullied by you surfacers again,” and hits me with an arrow.

Halved, Kostner and I get bit up by rats as we finish them off. Halved then charges down the hall towards Wenduag and steps into an ambush. Two cultists damage and flank him. I daze one of them. Wenduag shoots Susannae. Halved takes out the non-dazed foe and then vaults over the wall giving Wenduag cover. We try to close the distance. She resists my Daze and Halved hits her. Susannae steps up too. Wenduag has good armor, though.

The other cultist claims, “I am a chitinous finger of Descari,” then squeezes a bright red blast and we feel our energy somewhat taken away. We slowly advance. The cultist priest causes Susannae to drop her bow. I step up and run Wenduag through the heart. Susannae comes charging up and after missing the cultist badly, smites him down.

Susannae heals Halved to consciousness. We sort through some gear. Susannae fetches the others. Gwerm seems to be lightening up a bit.

I sneak ahead again. There seems to be a built-up hallway of cut stone blocks. It seems great for another ambush. I warn the others to follow carefully. It is a bit of a maze. I then see some dretch demons. They start grunting and squealing, begging for help. Kostner and Halved drink potions. I daze one dretch which is trying to summon another and strike the other with my rapier. That one spews out green gas. It makes Halved and Neva nauseated but I resist it. I stab that one again. Susannae finishes it.

Another dretch is summoned from the Abyss and I stab it through as it arrives. It terrifies Susannae in her mind. Kostner risks the poison and dashes into the cloud. Susannae runs away. The dretches move up to attack. One bites me. Kostner steps away. Neva comes back in and crushes one’s skull. Its companion tries to frighten her and she resists. Kostner hits the last one and then his arrows spill all over. I drink a potion and step back to stab the demon again. Kostner slays it. I find the end of the maze. It opens into a sewer.

When the others catch up, Gwerm says, “I was too hasty before. You did well. I can pay you more.” He offers to put Neva on retainer.

I call back to the others when I hear my name. I look at a cave-in. I see a hole in the wall and find some cold iron ore. I take the piece of black iron shaped like an acorn or a hive. “Dusk…” I hear.

The others are inquiring what it is. I say nothing. We climb up and we see Kenabres is ruined. Deep chasms riddle the city. Above, the skyline is forever changed. Smoke rises, buzzards wheel, and red fires burn.

Home Sweet Home

Dusk, here…

Susannae realizes we are in the southern Gate District. Gwerm wants to return home. Aravashnial wants to go to the library, instead. We decide to head to Gwerm’s. Kostner and I sneak ahead. We climb through a break in the wall into New Kenabres. A decorative garden has been wrecked. There are ratmen there, tearing things up. Demons. Abrikandilu. They hate artifice and beauty.

We double-back to drop Aravashnial at the library, the Blackwing Library, since we are passing it. It seems to be still standing. The doors are shut. There is a decrepit black wing of a vrock demon nailed above the doors. We hear a voice that says, “Stack those books better! Faster!” I get the fighters and have them go to the door. There are four people inside all tied up with piles of books around them. There is an armored man ordering another to stack the books. There are also two tieflings. The man has a symbol of Iomedae.

“What’s going on here?” I ask in Infernal as I stride in confidently, returning to my natural appearance. The human asks me to speak in Common. Instead I ask the tieflings who this clown is. “His name is Chayleb,” the tiefling replies. “Who are you?”

“I’m asking the questions here!” I yell. They say he has betrayed his people and wants to join the demons. I turn to him and say in Common, “I got to tell you something about demons, Chayleb. We don’t stack shit. We destroy it.”

Seeing that his back is turned to the door now, I try to daze him. I draw my sword. Still on his guard, unsurprised, he swats me down. “Just kill them!” he yells and the tieflings start to kill the hostages. Kostner and Halved take him out. The tieflings still attack the hostages. Halved slaughters one of them. The other runs. Susannae saves one hostage from dying. Neva catches the last one as he slips through a crack, with her glaive.

Halved brings the body back inside. Susannae unties the hostages. One is past saving. Another librarian, Ferna, says Chayleb, a possessed crusader was going to burn them and their books. He’d kept talking about how Kenabres was lost and he wanted to make good with the conquerors.

Aravashinal asks her where the other books are. Ferna says they took things, led by a man made of worms. Susannae wakes me up with potions. Ferna says the Defender’s Heart is the only safe place left.

The fallen paladin had a couple of potions. Susannae and Kostner heal up a little. We decide to barricade ourselves and rest. Ferna says she will keep watch. We rest and I look through a spellbook and scroll I found. I can only use one of the spells. As I sleep I have a dream of forging and hear the voice again. “Dusk…” says the ingot. “I’m no good to you this way.”

We leave again to make our way to the Defender’s Heart. A house has items being thrown out of it. There are more abrikandilu. We argue a little bit. I’m the only one who wanted to make sure people are not there. Then we make our way around it to Gwerm’s manor. It hardly looks damaged but it is vacant-looking. Gwerm’s house has a back entrance and we head towards there. The gardens are a little bit wrecked. We get a key from Gwerm and things look untouched inside. He is annoyed that there are no guards.

We travel through the manor. I use Ghost Sounds ahead of us to draw out any ambushes. He takes us down into the basement, to his vault. He has paintings and valuables. “I’m sure you must have realized my importance when you saw me. You did an above-average job in bringing me here.” We get paid 2000gp. We see his vault has a safe room. He will stay there.

We can stop by Anevia’s house, then the Temple of Calistria, on the way to the Defender’s Heart. Kostner and I come across a group of lightly armored figures, with horned helmets and glaives, and red sashes.

I make the sound of an alarmed person running away into a secondary alley. Four of them go down the alley. Two stay behind to watch the street. Kostner and I sneak back to the others and find a different street to take. We cross a giant gash in the ground covered in rubble and arrive at Anevia’s house.

Upon entering, I recognize a summoning spell being cast and then an eagle appears and attacks Neva. Neva smacks it and Kostner finishes it.

I coach the hitters into the bedroom and start detecting magic. Susannae tries to detect evil but finds none. Kostner checks the kitchen and grabs a bag of grain. Halved chops Anevia and Irabeth’s bed in half. Another eagle gets summoned and we hear the voice coming from the corner of the front room. I dash over as Neva attacks the eagle. I can tell there is a person in the corner. Kostner hits it with a bag of flour.

As Halved approaches, the figure reveals himself to be a half-orc in crimson armor and a horned helmet, holding a ranseur. Anevia shoots the eagle. The half-orc starts yelling in Orc. Then he causes fear in Halved. Neva steps up to fight him but misses. I strike him with a Shocking Grasp through my rapier. Kostner shoots him. Anevia takes out the eagle as Halved runs out into the street. The half-orc attacks Susannae. She hits him as does Kostner, twice. He tries to vault the table to escape but I run him through.
